1830 Viaduct
Designed by George Stephenson, this brick viaduct runs from the Water Street Bridge to almost the middle of the Power Hall. Much of it is hidden externally by the Station Building, 1830 Warehouse and vehicle ramp. You can see the interior of the viaduct arches that house the Gas Gallery, Station Building Auditorium and Wasted! Gallery.
Liverpool
Road Station stands on land that originally sloped down towards the
River Irwell. In order to make the site work efficiently for
both rail and road traffic, the Railway Company had to create upper
and lower levels. This viaduct determined the upper level and
the natural ground level at Water Street determined the lower
level.
The viaduct arches offered additional storage space. The 1926 Ordnance Survey map records that the arches between the Station Building and 1830 Warehouse were used for the storage of wine and spirits. However, the same arches are recorded as disused on the 1913, 1935 and 1947 maps.
