Party with MOSI if you're 25 years old
The Museum wants to invite anyone who was born on its opening day, 15 September 1983, to enjoy a VIP tour of its ‘Making of MOSI’ exhibition, a champagne lunch and goody bag on their birthday. The exhibition, which features the history of the Museum’s development in the context of changes in North West science and industry, will open to the public on 28 July and runs until 4 January.
Tony Hill, Acting Director at MOSI said: “The Making of MOSI exhibition is as much a reflection of the changes in the North West over the last 25 years, as a celebration of the story of one of Manchester’s most popular and established attractions. If you were born on the same day as the Museum opened please do get in touch to claim your invitation, and celebrate your 25th birthday with us!”
MOSI is based at the former Liverpool Road station, which was built in 1830 as part of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, and is the oldest surviving passenger railway station in the world.
The idea for a museum of science and industry was first agreed in 1965, when a funding partnership was set up between University of Manchester, UMIST and Manchester City Council. The Manchester Museum of Science and Technology first opened in 1971 at Oddfellows Hall on Grosvenor Street, Chorlton on Medlock. After Liverpool Road station closed in 1975, plans began to move the Museum to this location, and after significant investment from Greater Manchester Council and British Rail, the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry opened on the Liverpool Road site in 1983. Later this became The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, and in 2007 the Museum changed its name to MOSI.
The Making of MOSI exhibition opens on 28 July and runs until 4 January. If you are 25 years old on 15 September 2008 please contact Sarah Roe on Tel: 0161 606 0176 to claim your VIP tour and goody bag.
