Fly back in time to historic tea dance

MOSI’s Air & Space Hall will be transformed into an elegant 1940s-style tea dance, as part of the Manchester-wide Full of Life Festival (28 September – 10 October). Guests to the free event are invited to drift back in time to the age of flight, as some of Manchester’s aviation pioneers tell their stories over afternoon tea and dancing to Big Band music.

The event, which is held on 7 October, is one of a programme of free activities particularly aimed at people over the age of 50. It includes activities on Grandparents’ day (4 October), tours of the Museum with historical characters Lady Sophie Heath (the first person to fly across Africa) and early rail traveller Mrs Chadwick (30 September and 6 October), as well as a chance to get up close to collection items at our Collections Centre open day (2 October). On 5 October there is a focus on Alzheimer’s and Dementia with a debate at 1pm, and a talk from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust at 6pm. The event follows shortly after the announcement of the government –led Nuffield report into Dementia care.

MOSI director Steve Davies MBE said: “The Museum is packed full of interesting collections and stories for all age groups but our core audience is usually young families. We wanted to put together a programme of activities to encourage older people to come and have a look round MOSI. Many of our most interesting stories, told through our collections and our popular historical characters, are from eras which some older people will remember first-hand, and this event helps to celebrate these amazing achievements. Please do come along and join in the fun!”
