Lion dance to celebrate MOSI link with China
A traditional Chinese lion dance was performed outside MOSI today to celebrate the Museum’s new link with the China Museum of Science and Technology in Beijing. It is the first partnership between a British and Chinese Science Museum and the event also marks the launch of a new photography exhibition about China.
The dance was performed in front of Mr Ni Jian, Consul General of China in Manchester, and MOSI director Steve Davies, to symbolise good luck for an eight-strong MOSI team, who will travel to China between 26 March and 2 April to formally establish the partnership.
The visit is hosted by the Consulate General of China in Manchester and heralds the start of a number of joint projects with the China Museum of Science and Technology, including new exhibitions, exhibit loans and staff exchanges.
MOSI is currently offering visitors a glimpse of China old and new through its Visions of China photography exhibition. Produced in association with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Manchester, the images show aspects of the country’s culture, technology and natural beauty.
MOSI director, Steve Davies MBE, commented: “There is a definite synergy between our two museums and this partnership offers wonderful opportunities for sharing knowledge and ideas.
“There are already links in place between British and Chinese museums but MOSI is the first one in the UK to join forces with a science and technology museum which is very exciting,” he added. “We especially look forward to a reciprocal visit to Manchester in October, which will be timed to coincide with the Manchester Science Festival. We hope that the Chinese community in the North West will be able to visit MOSI at that time in order to meet members of the Beijing museum team”
The week-long trip will include meetings at the Beijing museum as well meetings with the staffs of other related museums in China.
