Wannabe scientists are invited to a tea party with a difference this weekend. At the  Mad Scientists’ Tea Party on Saturday 14 August visitors are asked to dress in their best ‘mad scientist’ outfit and encouraged to learn about the chemistry of their cuppas, nibble an exploding cupcake, or try their hands at blowing a giant bubble.

The tea party, which is a trailblazer for the upcoming Manchester Science Festival in October, is held at Cathedral Gardens (just outside Urbis), and includes fun science experiments and arts and crafts activities for all ages. A prize will be awarded to the best-dressed mad scientist.

Science themed cupcakes by Flissycakes range from the alarming ‘radioactive cake’, which includes brazil nuts (did you know they include mildly radioactive radium?), to the ‘exploding cake’ - with compressed carbon dioxide for that burst of bubbles in your mouth. There are also teas from locally sourced herbs, mashed into liquid refreshment by local firm Marbella.

Manchester Science Festival Director Natalie Ireland said: “Come and join us for tea and cake and a bit of fun at our surreal summer tea party. The food and drink will be delicious – if a little surprising - and it’s a great chance to find out something about science you never knew. This is a trailblazer event for Manchester Science Festival, which aims to show you the many unexpected faces of science. The Mad Scientists’ Tea Party is held between 10am-4pm on Saturday 14^thAugust, Cathedral Gardens (outside Urbis), Manchester City Centre.

This event is free and there’s no need to book – just turn up!
