New exhibition to sum up essence of Manchester
Is it Old Trafford, the Beetham Tower, or the Curry Mile? Cotton machinery, Emmeline Pankhurst or, simply, an umbrella? What does Manchester mean to you? The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) has launched an appeal to nominate objects, people or places which sum up what Manchester means to residents and visitors.
The entries will be put forward for an exhibition on 'What Manchester Means to Me', which will open at the Museum later this year. Nominations should include anything which is unique to Manchester and Greater Manchester, a new innovation with roots in the area, or simply something that people in the area need every day.
The Museum is gathering nominations of places, people, archives, images or objects, which sum up the essence of Manchester for people who live in and around the city. A selection of the items will be displayed in the Community Exhibition Gallery, through photos, objects, or art.
Charlotte Smith, Community Development Officer at the Museum said: "We are increasingly living in a world where cities have more similiarities than differences. We wanted to create an exhibition which shouts about all the things which make Manchester and its surroundings unique. So please tell us about the favourite objects, places and people in your area, and why they are special to you.
"It might be something we already have in our collections, or may be a favourite building or celebrity. The best nominations will be displayed as images, or objects (if they are small enough), in our Community Exhibitions Gallery."
