The Power of Communications Against Tobacco
Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS 4, is joining forces with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) and the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) to support No Smoking Day (Wednesday 12 March 2008) and educate visitors about the negative impacts of smoking.
The ECL has mounted a special presentation at BODY WORLDS 4, which is currently showing at Manchester-based MOSI, called 'The Power of Communications Against Tobacco'. It features information about the effectiveness of pictorial health warnings on tobacco products. The UK government has recently committed to adopt the recommendations contained in the EU Directive on Tobacco Products and will, by the end of 2009, place graphic pictorial warnings which highlight the dangers of smoking on all tobacco products.
Other dramatic illustrations of the dangers of smoking in Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS 4 are blackened and cancer-ridden smokers' lungs. The striking comparison with the adjacent healthy lungs of a non-smoker has moved visitors at other BODY WORLDS exhibitions to discard their unfinished cigarette packs on the glass display cases containing the smoker's lung and vow to quit smoking.
Cora Honing, President, Association of European Cancer Leagues says: "ECL is proud to be the cancer prevention partner for BODY WORLDS 4. Visitors will have the possibility to see what damage cancer can do to our bodies and to learn how they can prevent it."
ECL will ensure that visitors to BODY WORLDS 4 will have access to free information on the Great No Smoking Day challenge, including tips and details of support to help successfully quit on the day and stay smoke-free, thanks to Cancer Research UK volunteers and to Macmillan cancer support literature.
About No Smoking Day
About BODY WORLDS 4
BODY WORLDS 4 is the culmination of Dr von Hagens' 30 year career in anatomy. The exhibition premiere in Manchester features numerous plastinates never seen before. Previous exhibitions of BODY WORLDS have attracted nearly 25 million visitors, making it the most highly attended touring exhibition in the world.
Dr Gunther von Hagens, a licensed physician and former researcher at the University of Heidelberg's Anatomy and Pathology Department, invented Plastination in 1977, in an effort to improve the education of medical students. The exhibition emphasises the importance of healthy lifestyles, and includes several plastinates posed in sporting activities, such as badminton, running and jumping, to demonstrate muscle function.
The organs and whole-body plastinates in the exhibition derive from people who have, in their lifetime, generously donated their bodies for Plastination, to specifically educate future generations about health. More than 8,000 donors including 103 from Britain have bequeathed their bodies to von Hagens' Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg, Germany.
BODY WORLDS 4 is supported by the British Red Cross, the Association of European Cancer League and the Polycystic Kidney Disease charity.

About the Museum of Science and Industry
The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), located at Liverpool Road, Manchester, is a charitable trust (registration 518412) which receives revenue funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). MOSI is dedicated to making Science and Industry inspirational to all, while highlighting our specific region's rich and continuous contribution to scientific endeavour and education.
Our vision is to be a world class cultural attraction right at the heart of everything Manchester has to offer.
About the Institute for Plastination (IfP) and the process of Plastination
Dr. Gunther von Hagens founded the IFP in 1993. It is involved in co-ordinating the BODY WORLDS exhibitions and administrating the unique Body Donation programme. Plastination is today mainly performed at the Plastinarium in Guben, Germany.
During Plastination, bodily fluids and soluble fats are extracted from a specimen, and replaced through vacuum-forced impregnation, with reactive resins and elastomers, such as silicon rubber. The specimen is then cured with light, heat, or certain gases, which gives it rigidity and permanence.
