Object information sheets

Whitworth gear-cutting machine

Our collections cover a wide range of object types, from tiny microchips and microphotographs to huge locomotives and aircraft. These information sheets cover some of our most impressive individual exhibits, such as the Haydock beam engine and Elm Street mill engine in the Power Hall. They also cover some object types that are well represented in our collections, but do not feature heavily in our current galleries. For example, Manchester was an important centre of machine tool manufacture but most of our machine tools are in store.

You can find out more about other individual object and types of object by using our Collections Online database.
