Recent acquisitions

MOSI has recently purchased a tandem bicycle (shown above) made by Jack Sibbit in about 1928. Jack Sibbit (1895-1950) was born in Ancoats, Manchester.  His hand-built bicycle business was boosted by his success as a track cyclist. He was a national champion, winning eight tandem sprint championships. He also held individual titles in sprints and long-distance races. Jack Sibbit was a member of the Manchester Wheelers' Club and regularly raced at the Fallowfield track.

Barbirolli court costume Another recent buy was this court dress, worn by Sir John Barbirolli when he was awarded his knighthood in 1949. Barbirolli (1899-1970) was principal conductor of Manchester’s world-famous Hallé Orchestra from 1943 until his death. Only Charles Hallé himself was principal conductor for longer. This purchase coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Hallé Orchestra.
