Museum of Science and Industry

Why do we collect?

Museums collect objects to support our understanding of how the world has developed. For example, our collections include samples of printed cottons (see above) that were exported from Manchester to many parts of the world. Museum collections may be used in displays, for research or education, and in many other ways.

Collections in Handling Area

Researchers in the Study AreaObjects and archives can tell us a lot about how people lived and worked, their tastes, their creativity and their history. For example, information about our collections may help in researching a company's history or type of object for a school project, a university thesis, a book or a television programme.
