Museum of Science and Industry

These options are designed to provide an easy introduction to the scope of the collections.  Within each category, there are subsidiary options, each of which is a 'pre-defined query', which gives you a list of related items in our collections.  The items are listed in batches of five.  At present, each category only contains one to three subsidiary options, but more options will be added in 2008.

The categories are as follows:

Themes

MOSI's collections relate to a variety of themes, such as branches of science and industry, materials and events.  The two examples available at present are stop-motion animation and textile trade marks.

Places

Our collections have links to both the local area and to countries as far afield as Australia.  The current place options lie within Greater Manchester - East Manchester and Trafford Park.

People and organisations

Our collections are linked to people and organisations that played the roles of maker, designer, user, subject and so on.  At present, the sole example is John Benjamin Dancer, Manchester's most illustrious scientific instrument maker.

Galleries

The purpose of this category is to provide a quick way to find out what items are displayed in our individual galleries.  The Power Hall, Gas Gallery and Air & Space Hall are the choices currently available.

Archive collections

You can choose from three selected archive collections - relating to the Electricity Council, Metropolitan-Vickers/GEC-Alsthom (of Trafford Park) and Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd.  For each collection, there is a summary of the whole collection and its context, as well as a list of items in the collection.
