Museum of Science and Industry

In this information system, the term multimedia is used for anything that exists in a file format that can be read by other software.  Multimedia file formats include document and pdf formats as well as those for still and moving images, and sound.

An image thumbnail for each item appears in both list formats.  In the case of archive items, photographic images will not exist for some types of item, such as ledgers or minute books; instead, such items will be represented by generic thumbnails.  If an item has more than one related multimedia file, the other pieces of multimedia will appear as thumbnails in the multimedia section at the bottom of the record display page.  Click on the relevant thumbnail to activate the file.

The Museum only publishes multimedia that it has appropriate intellectual property rights to.  The Museum asserts these rights, which may be summarised as follows:

· copyright vested in the Museum as author;

· copyright assigned to the Museum by the original or previously assigned copyright holder;

· reproduction rights acquired through the expiry of copyright and subsequent copying to a reproducible medium;

· usage rights assigned to the Museum by the copyright holder.

You are entitled to download multimedia files for private use, including educational use.  We discourage attempted commercial use of freely available multimedia by only providing multimedia in low quality formats.  For example, images are only available as small (highly compressed) jpeg files.  This also reduces the download times.  These images are not watermarked.
