Forces, Friction and Steam Power Presenter explaining in front of a steam engine

The presentation is suitable for Year 3 to Year 6 children and takes place at 1.30pm.

The presentation focuses on forces and friction at work in the one of the large stationary steam engines in the Power Hall. Our presenters will outline the transfer of forces and role of friction in the operation of the machine.

Engineer Eric's Difficult Day

Engineer Eric

The presentation is suitable for Y3 and Y4 children and takes place at 11.00am.

Meet Engineer Eric and Forgetful Fireman Fred and learn how a steam locomotive works. They work for Pender Railways and have to get Pender ready. Although Eric explains carefully, Forgetful Fred finds it hard to remember what he has been told and may need help from the children to remember how to prepare the locomotive.

Pender is a 'tank' engine built in Manchester in 1873. One side of the locomotive has been sectioned to reveal the workings inside. The Story of Pender, an illustrated 32-page book featuring Engineer Eric and Forgetful Fireman Fred can be downloaded as a PowerPoint or PDF file from the KS1 page about Engineer Eric's Difficult Day.
