KS2 - Science
KS2 Science Taught Sessions
Taught sessions for KS2 science:
- cost £3.00 per pupil (Minimum group charge of £66.00*)
- are led by a Museum Education Officer
- last 1 hour
- are closely linked to the National Curriculum
- include hands-on practical activities
- can be booked for classes of up to 36 children
- include a Teachers' Pack with more information and resources
*There is no minimum group charge for special needs groups
Winter Special Offer
Book a taught session for December or January and pay just the minimium group charge of £66.00 for your class.
Space
Starting with hands-on activities using simple models, we discover how the Sun, Earth and Moon interact, before entering the Planetarium to explore the solar system and the sky at night. (Sc4/4a, b, c, d).
Session available every weekday during school term time from 29 September 2008.
Please note:
- Our Planetarium can accommodate 30 people so classes are restricted to a maximum of 28 pupils plus 2 adult helpers for this session. Contact us to discuss alternative arrangements if you have more than 28 pupils in you class.
- Sections of the Air and Space Hall on the first floor balcony relating to space exploration and science fiction have now been closed pending redevelopment.
Sound
How are sounds made and changed? How do our brains receive sound energy through our ears? Which materials carry sound best? Children investigate these questions through a variety of hands-on activities. (Sc4/3e, 3f, 3g) Session available from 15 Sept to 10 Oct 2008 and 23 Feb to 20 March 2009.

Materials
What are materials? Where do useful materials come from? Practical activities to explore the properties of rocks, soil and metals. (Sc3/1a, 1d. 2f, 2g). Session available 15 Sept to 7 Nov 2008.
Forces and Friction
Through practical activities the children explore and measure friction, gravity, magnetic forces and levitation. (Sc4/2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e). Session available every week during school term time. NB Max. class size is 30 pupils.

Solid, Liquid, Gas
What is water like? How does it change state when heated and cooled? How do we use water to change materials? Children work on practical activities to mix and separate water from other materials. (Sc3/1e, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f, 2g 3b, 3c, 3d). Session available from 26 Jan to 14 Mar 2008.
Light and Colour
Where does light come from? Lots of practical activities to investigate shadows, reflections, coloured lights, primary and secondary colours. (Sc4/3a, 3b, 3c, 3d). Session available from 10 Nov 2008 to 16 Jan 2009 and 9 Mar to 8 May 2009.
Batteries, Bulbs and Buzzers
Construct simple circuits that include batteries, bulbs, buzzers and switches. Control the current in a circuit. (Sc4/1a, 1b, 1c). Session available from 10 Nov 2008 to 16 Jan 2009 and 9 Mar to 8 May 2009.
