Museum of Science and Industry

Risk Assessment

You may have to complete a risk assessment for your group or class in line with your organisation's policy and guidelines.

Please note that:

  • The Museum cannot do the risk assessment for you.
  • The Museum has carried out risk assessments to ensure that there are no significant hazards to visitors and staff. It is not practicable to send you copies of the large number of risk assessments that MOSI has carried out on its buildings, equipment and activities.

Hazards at MOSI

MOSI is a relatively low risk environment and injuries to visitors are rare but you may find the following information about some specific hazards on MOSI's site helpful in carrying out your risk assessment.

  • Moving machinery - you may want to explain to pupils the health and safety reasons for the barriers surrounding the Museum's industrial exhibits.
  • Uneven surfaces - the Museum's yards are cobbled and have railway tracks set into them, however, a network of smooth paths allows visitors to move around the site.
  • Car parking - the yards are used for car parking so visitors will need to exercise care when moving between buildings.
  • Ramp to lower yard - the ramp is for vehicles and, as indicated by signs, must not be used by pedestrians.
  • Zebra crossing - you will need to use the zebra crossing on Lower Byrom Street to move between the Air and Space Hall and the rest of the Museum's site.
  • Building work - contractors are currently working on part of the Museum's site as part of the Main Building Redevelopment. The building site is fenced off and access is controlled by the contractor in accordance with construction-industry standards. Museum visitors should not enter the building works.

General Information on Risk Assessment

Information on risk assessments for teachers should be available from your school and/or LEA.
