Winton Capital
Winton Capital Management, the British investment management firm, partnered with MOSI in 2011 to sponsor the 'Ernest Rutherford: Father of Nuclear Physics', presented in Manchester Science Gallery. This temporary exhibition celebrated the centenary of his work and examines Rutherford's legacy in the city.
The exhibition looked at the work of Rutherford and his team in Manchester, and how this has shaped our lives, notably through the development of nuclear energy and the use of radiotherapy for medical diagnosis and cancer treatment.
The Manchester Evening News covered the exhibition launch in August and further coverage was recorded on the BBC website and on BBC Radio Manchester. The Institute of Physics also recorded a short film about the exhibition which appears on the Physics World website. Between August and October 2011, MOSI recorded that over 200,000 visitors would have taken the opportunity to view the exhibition.
As part of the celebration of Rutherford MOSI's team of Presenters created a costumed character performance to bring his discoveries further to life for both general visitors and schools groups. During the time of the exhibition the show was presented on ten occasions, including three times to secondary school groups and twice during Manchester Science Festival.
