Manchester Science Festival

Manchester Science Festival is an annual nine-day, multi-venue festival run over the October half-term holiday. It is Manchester’s premier event for public engagement with science and engineering, promoting the region’s rich heritage of past scientific achievements and endeavours whilst showcasing current innovative science, technology and engineering research and practice.

The programme includes a wide range of activities and events, including workshops, exhibitions, films, talks, tours, and more, and takes place in venues across Manchester city centre, utilising unexpected public places and other cultural and science venues across the city and Greater Manchester. There is also a programme for schools which takes place prior to the Festival.

From the evaluation of the 2009 Manchester Science Festival, we established that:

  • 102,288 attendees from Greater Manchester and across the UK enjoyed;
  • 317 events (exhibitions, demonstrations, school workshops and community projects) created by;
  • 57 organisations across;
  • 48 unique, city-wide locations, (including public, cultural, community, academic, educational, social, indoor and outdoor sites) 

Events at the 2009 Festival included:

  • Walking with Robots at MOSI
  • The science of bees with the British Bee Keepers Association
  • The science of the paranormal – lecture and mock séance with Richard Wiseman on Halloween night
  • Open tour of the Siemens train care depot
  • Science experiment busking at the Trafford Centre, Arndale and on the Key 103 bus.
